Understanding Louisiana Taxes (2024)

Louisiana has a progressive income tax system with three brackets. This calculator helps estimate your take-home pay by considering state, federal, and FICA taxes.

Louisiana State Income Tax

For 2024, Louisiana uses a three-bracket progressive income tax system with rates from 1.85% to 4.25%.

  • Tax Brackets (2024):
    • 1.85% on the first $12,500 of taxable income ($25,000 for joint filers)
    • 3.5% on taxable income between $12,500 and $50,000 ($25,000 to $100,000 for joint filers)
    • 4.25% on taxable income over $50,000 ($100,000 for joint filers)
  • Standard Deduction: $4,500 for Single/Married Filing Separately, $9,000 for Married Filing Jointly/Head of Household.
  • Personal Exemption: $1,000 for each exemption (taxpayer, spouse, and dependents).
  • Additional Dependent Exemption: $1,000 additional exemption for each dependent (total $2,000 per dependent).

Federal Income Tax Deduction

Louisiana is one of the few states that allows taxpayers to deduct their federal income tax payments from their state taxable income. This can significantly reduce your Louisiana tax liability.

Note: This calculator provides a simplified estimate and does not fully implement the federal income tax deduction, which would require a more complex calculation.

Parish Taxes

Louisiana does not have local income taxes imposed by parishes (counties). However, parishes do levy sales and property taxes that can vary widely.

Federal Income Tax

Your federal income tax is calculated based on federal tax brackets, your filing status, deductions (standard or itemized), and allowances claimed on your W-4 form. Pre-tax deductions like 401(k) or HSA contributions reduce your federal taxable income.

FICA Taxes (Social Security & Medicare)

FICA taxes fund Social Security and Medicare. These are typically withheld by employers.

  • Social Security: 6.2% on income up to the annual limit ($168,600 for 2024).
  • Medicare: 1.45% on all income. An additional 0.9% Medicare tax applies to income above certain thresholds ($200,000 for Single, $250,000 for MFJ).

Other Louisiana Taxes (Not Calculated Here)

While this calculator focuses on income taxes, be aware of other taxes in Louisiana:

  • Sales Tax: Louisiana has a state sales tax rate of 4.45%, with additional local taxes that can bring the total up to 11.45% in some areas.
  • Property Tax: Louisiana has some of the lowest property tax rates in the nation.
  • No Estate or Inheritance Tax: Louisiana does not have either of these taxes.
